Response to the statement
"Tax dollars should not be wasted on art, music or theater classes in high school. Public high schools should be about training young people to enter the workforce. Period."
First off, I strongly disagree with this statement. This statement is proposing that it is a waste to put taxes towards certain classes that are the foundations of careers and everyone should work in the "workforce" which I suppose refers to an office job. Not every person is fit for a office job. The world would lack creative input from people in the world. This statement seems to be have said from an older adult who grew up in a different lifestyle and culture. In this day and age, Work can come in many ways. From Broadway, producer, designer, chef, and artists, because these people do what they do, the world is fun and people are able to enjoy things outside of work. Currently Florida has no job income state tax therefore tax is mostly coming from homes. There is a good chance the salary may be higher in the said categories versus the so called office job "workforce". A large amount of people have went to YouTube for a career. From recording every day video logs of family life to posting reviews and trying out gadgets, the opportunities are endless. The salary varies from month to month but every career in some way interconnects.
To limit a generation would be to limit every-ones opportunities. Entertainment such as movies would very different. The actors most likely started out in theater in high school which possibly led to the infamous show "SNL" than that probably led to the big screen. Because taxes funded a good foundation theater class, they were able to be successful in life.
The official definition of workforce is "people who are engaged in or available work, either in a counter or area in a particular company or industry". This definition technically does not exclude arts, music and theater. Even if taxes were not used to pay for "extra" "not needed classes" there is a good chance classes would be able to raise money on their own for example selling products and tickets can raise money as well as students bringing in materials for classes can help lower class costs. Even a car wash can bring in money for a class. The sad reality is classes and teachers do have to raise money for their schooling. A school district sets a budget and to stay in the budget the school board makes a priority list the core needed classes are at the top and all other classes are mostly categorized as electives and "extra".
The whole reason why taxes are used for our schools is because public schools don't have a set cost to attend so in order to get money, schools receive from state taxes. I would not have such a problem with this statement if it was said differently. It is not a waste to have tax dollars that a person cant avoid paying anyway go to career foundation classes. This statement is a contradiction of its self given the fact that the term workforce includes any career. To conclude, Tax dollars are used to fund future generations of careers. Although the world is not perfect, education has been very successful in its teachings.
