Photoshop tutorial assignment

I would like to add a comment that for both sites there was links that could not be found

For my first tutorial assignment, I did a 3d  water effect and it was not successful.

The tutorial gave very little information on how to get to things as well as a handful of photos that somewhat helped me. below is what I got vs the goal effect.

Tutorial 2 was so easy to follow and took 10 minutes to do- it was a step by step
I used the tutorial as guide line and I would like to use this effect again
